News flowers in Chelsea Flower show 2009

It's also the perfect time to introduce new plants, and Chris Blom of Bloms Bulbs (D21) is introducing five new tulips. There are three weather-resistant, peony-flowered doubles with strong stems – the rose-pink 'Jumai', the cream-white 'Danceline' and the scarlet-red 'Cosmic Dancer'. Chris also has a green and white viridiflora with exceptionally pointed petals called 'Greenstar'. But the most eye-catching is a lily-flowered, blood-red, 'Typhoon'.

Most of the plants launched at Chelsea, however, capture summer, and new roses abound. David Austin Roses (C22) releases four varieties. 'Kew Gardens' commemorates the 250th anniversary of the botanic garden and the nursery is replanting a rose garden behind the Palm House using a design mapped out in 1848. The apricot buds of 'Kew Gardens' open to form five-petalled cream flowers. 'Tam o' Shanter', a cerise shrub rose, celebrates another 250th anniversary – that of the birth of the poet Robbie Burns while the 'Lady of Shalott', a copper-pink chalice-shaped rose, recognises the bicentenary of Tennyson's birth. David Austin's favourite, 'The Wedgwood Rose', is a soft-pink shrub that can also be used as a climber. He describes it as having an "almost gossamer-like quality with a lovely fruity fragrance on the outer petals and a clove-like scent at the centre". This rose celebrates Wedgwood's 250th birthday. Charles Darwin was Josiah Wedgwood's grandson and this year is the bicentenary of his birth as well.

Peter Beales Roses (E10) launches an elegant yellow rose with high-gloss foliage named 'Grosvenor House' in celebration of the hotel's 80th birthday. Bred by the late Colin Horner, it will be widely planted in Hyde Park.

Harkness Roses (D9) shows eight new varieties, and two merit special attention. One, a compact crimson-red floribunda, was selected by the scientist Sir Robert Winston at the nursery some years ago. Named 'Robert Winston', it will benefit his chosen charity, Women for Women, an organisation that helps war-torn women and young children recover and rebuild.

'The Girlguiding UK Centenary Rose' has clusters of almost-single, red-purple flowers, each with a smart white centre. The guiding charity will accrue 20 per cent from each sale.

Raymond Evison (F14) of Guernsey Clematis has two compact and floriferous clematis. 'Ooh La La' has ruffled, raspberry-pink flowers with contrasting purple striping; the equally flower-packed 'Fleuri' has deep-purple flowers with indigo overtones.

Hillier has a new 'chameleon' heuchera bred in France called 'Tiramisu'. In spring the chartreuse-green foliage is striking, but as summer fades the foliage takes on a chocolate hue before turning to frosted verdigris in winter when the veining is most prominent. Hillier also has new cordylines, 'Sunrise' and Southern Splendour'.

Cayeux Iris (C11) has 100 years' experience of growing and breeding irises at its 55-acre nursery. It exhibits three of its nine new irises. 'Bel Avenir' has pale-lemon standards and soft violet-blue falls; 'Nuit de Noces' is a purple-pink iris with striking orange beards and there is also a nautical navy-blue and pure-white bicolour called 'Coeur d'Or'.

Hardy's Cottage Garden Plants (G19) has another sun lover Scabiosa africana 'Jocelyn' and this large-flowered scabious is a clear-pink rather than a wishy-washy lilac.

Sarah Conibear's lupins are a Chelsea favourite on Westcountry Nurseries (G27) and this year she introduces 'Thunder', a moody purple with a yellow fleck.

Broadleigh Bulbs (E6) is offering a Pacific Coast iris or Californian iris called 'Broadleigh Fenella', a two-tone purple and cream. These quieter irises flower well in shade in May and they can produce hundreds of flowers over six weeks so are extremely useful in the garden. I can see the muted 'Broadleigh Fenella' mingling well with the hardy, scented viola 'Abigail', a new yellow and purple viola bred by Victorian Violas (G19) and there is a new two-tone pink called 'Nellie'.

Eagle Sweet Peas (B17) has three new varieties, including the cream picotee 'Keira Madeline' and the salmon-orange 'Leominster Boy'. But one of its new varieties, an orange-striped sweet pea, has been christened 'Geoff Hughes' after the actor who portrayed Onslow in Keeping up Appearances.

The affable presenter of Bargain Hunt, Tim Wonnacott, also has a suitably sunny new chrysanthemum named for him by Chrysanthemums Direct (C27).

Bowden Hostas (G4) from Devon introduces 'War Paint' a green hosta with a jaunty splash of yellow and The Big Plant Nursery (E18) shows a miniature ginkgo called 'Pixie'. It looks more like a bonsai specimen so would be suitable for the smallest garden – whether there are pixies at the bottom or not.

Chelsea Flower Show 2009: gardening equipment

Productive gardener
For anyone keen to grown their own, we've found four great raised bed kits (see top of page). Then head for Burgon & Ball (EA70), which has a new seed and plant spacing rule (£18) and a dibblet marked with 1cm (1/3in) depth graduations (£5), both made of beech. It also sells old-fashioned brown paper packets (£4) for collecting seeds and tins to store them (£19). Equally nostalgic are the plant labels from The New Eden (EA73), six for £17, each bearing a veg portrait.

Harrod Horticultural (PW39) has just designed, with the RHS, an "idiot-proof" wire growing system for fruit trees. A 16½ft starter run of metal posts and high-strength steel cable costs £189.95.

Spear & Jackson (EA82) have a solution for gardening clutter: new secateurs with interchangeable heads – anvil, bypass and flower pruner blades, and snips. The first pair costs £22.99, and each extra head £9.49. The handle swaps for a knife (£4.99) and sharpener (£3.99). Composting may be chic, but it can be smelly – unless you use the compact Porch ComposTumbler from Globe Organic Services (RHW22). Bung in your kitchen waste, give the sealed drum a turn, and you'll have plant food in no time. It usually costs £161 but Telegraph readers can get £10 off any Globe product ordered online during the show; enter the code CHPCT.

If the summer is as glorious as predicted, we might need shade. The Coro pergola is sleekly Italian, in marine-grade steel and acrylic. It stands 8ft high and 4¼yd square, and costs £8,970 plus £1,380 for blinds, from Encompass Furniture & Accessories (SR27).

Nick Hornby-type fathers will appreciate the inspiration behind Chris Eckersley's Byrdhouses – the TV set used when the Byrds sang Mr Tambourine Man in 1965. The powder-coated steel houses come in several groovy colours, £325. Visit Design Nation (CW4), a not-for-profit promoter of British designers.

This year, Toby Clayton of Hot Metal Engineering (SR35) is sharing a stand with Sarah Eberle, whose 2007 garden won Best in Show, to exhibit his limited-edition accessories. His oxidised steel firebox (£420) is gritty and sculptural.

The new personalised bistro set from Gap Garden Products (WA3) has words cut out of the metal chair-backs and table top. You can have anything you like – names or a quote. A table and two chairs costs £249.

Cottage gardener
Recycled-steel obelisks from Gardenscape Constructions & Trellisworks (RS6) are a novel way of supporting climbers. At the top is a metal decorative cage, which doubles as a bird feeder (£119.30 to £225).

Antique stone troughs are hard to find. Collector Rachel Adams of Original Stone Troughs (RHW6) scours the country for them. Prices range from £300 to £2,000-plus.

Will Wilson is a young Aussie sculptor, but he knows how to appeal to the English gardener, making bronze bird-baths with blue tits, blackbirds or robins on the rim. He says they also work well as beer coolers for parties. Prices depend on the size – from 1ft to 4ft across – and birds. Head for Willie Wildlife Sculptures (RM22).

Cotswold master blacksmith Michael Jacques (SR28) makes an airy, see-through rocking bench that adds to a pretty garden view. From £3,000.

Frances Hilary (SR6) designs top-notch kit. This year, you'll find durable cotton half-aprons (£25), aprons (£30) and hats (£28.50) printed with roses.

Hunter Boot (EA85) has gone all flowery too, using five botanical prints from the RHS archive on its wellies. The clog (£35), says the firm, is "the new back-door essential".

Stately gardener
A baronial backdrop isn't essential to show off sculptor Hamish Mackie's (RM35) bronzes – but it helps. The stag looking back over its shoulder is made to be the focal point of a long vista. Mackie's passion is Africa, hence the bronzes of cheetahs and leopards. Prices from £1,900 to £48,000.

Tregothnan (MW3), the Cornish estate famous for its tea plantation and honey, is exhibiting an elegant beehive designed by Chelsea medallist Robert Myers. Modelled on a Victorian mansion, it is also high-tech to help the bees fight off the deadly varroa mite and colony collapse disorder. A hive with bees costs £6,780.

Big gardens need big pots and South African Yogi de Beer of Longkloof Pottery (RS13) produces glazed wine jars and Ali Baba shapes from 25in up to 5ft tall (£1,000 to £7,000).

To show off your plants, head for Marston & Langinger (MA12), which is selling contemporary timber staging (£685) – you pick the colour.

Barlow Tyrie's (SR18) Mercury serving table is ideal for entertaining. Made of teak and marine-grade steel, with a ceramic top, this trolley is marvellously chic at £1,650.

Chelsea Flower Show 2009

Sarah Eberle’s three Credit Crunch Gardens included a neat way of making intriguing paving. The colourful paving was made using salvaged metal grilles. These were laid on hardcore and the 1cm-square spaces within the grille filled with different-coloured gravels. By using a contrasting palette of six different, but fairly muted, gravels, Sarah and her contractor Peter Dowle created an array of different mosaics. These showed London landmarks such as the London Eye and Tower Bridge. But the idea could work in any garden, say for an outdoor eating area, and would not only be fun to construct, but also delightfully different. Other metal grilles were stacked up – secured to each other using reclaimed gearing shafts – to form two invitingly generous steps up to the front door.

Kate Gould in her Eco Chic garden had an interesting and effective wall detail. Horizontal, sanded scaffold boards were arranged like shelves against the wall running from top to bottom. These were being used at Chelsea for purely decorative purposes, but by widening the gap you could use them for storage space and still keep up appearances, too.

The Marston and Langinger greenhouse display was packed with simple ideas that whetted my appetite. The veg-stuffed raised beds – made of pine planks, joined together with hidden timber pegs and vertical posts – reminded me of scaled-up wooden vegetable boxes you used to see in greengrocers. The firm’s mammoth standard fig arrived in a huge black plastic planter straight from Crocus’s nursery, and not being able to find a suitable attractive pot, a resourceful helper popped up to Peter Jones, bought a few metres of off-white canvas and neatly sewed a cover for it. A clever trick we could all put to good effect.

On Gardeners’ Question Time we are always being asked for ways of hiding that garden eyesore we all have to use – the washing line. Mark Gregory’s garden for The Children’s Society included this clever umbrella-like line that folds away into a cupboard which is an integral part of the stylish wooden garden room.

Surprisingly for Chelsea, I spied some artificial lawn. LazyLawn (www.lazylawn.co.uk) has been allowed in for the first time and I can see it neatly covering a few awkward places in gardens. It’s a million miles away from that artificial grass you’ll see at your greengrocer’s, and it did convince me. On the firm’s stand they demonstrated its flexibility by furnishing the walls with it too (some funky grass seats perhaps?) It is laid on 50mm (2in) of fine gravel, is guaranteed against fading for 12 years and costs £55 per square metre. It is super soft to sit on and low friction, which means unsuccessful handstands aren’t too painful. LazyLawn is often laid with a mowing margin to complete the ''natural’’ look. It drains and might need the occasional brush, but in awkward spaces where maintenance, shade, weight (roof gardens) or watering are a problem, this could well be the answer.

A huge basket of wooden apples and pears in various sizes caught my eye: they would make neat finials to punctuate a trellis in a potager perhaps? Emily Readett-Bayley’s stand (www.poshgraffiti.com) also had letters in different finishes – gold, silver, wood and others – which would be perfect for a tree-house or garden hideaway.

Barbecues and all the paraphernalia around them are becoming garden essentials. For the man who has everything, the Grillslinger holster-type arrangement for the avid barbecuer to elegantly display his tools (two sets of tongs, a knife and flipper) seems like a good, useful present. These were sold by Mode Lifestyle (www.mode.co.uk; 0844 463 8034).

I was also really taken by the black Revolver fire pit, which measures 60cm (2ft) in diameter and 30cm (1ft) high and costs £119. It would provide a cosy focal point on a terrace allowing you to chew the fat into the small hours.

Nature Ascending, an urban garden designed by Angus Thompson and Jane Brockbank, had some very subtle decking. The boards were laid vertically instead of the normal horizontal with gaps between each. Although you could not walk on it in stilettos, this was more than compensated for by the look – far less block-like in appearance than conventionally laid decking. There were plenty of other clever ideas in this garden. Circular bird feeders made from timber discs with wire half-spheres in the centre that were stuffed with bird food were mounted on the walls; a fabulous idea and well worth copying.

The pair had also included modern bird houses that had been equally well thought-out; they were fixed behind a false wall, so all that was visible from the front were circular wooden studs with a mini hole in the centre aimed at attracting sparrows to make their homes inside. These were positioned regularly at three-metre spacings, on advice from the RSPB

"Hemos tenido gran acogida.

(GM)
